So I checked the compatible routers on the software and purchased the Linksys WRT54GS Wireless-G Broadband Router with SpeedBooster.I couldn't get this router to work with the slingbox at all. First off, this is a really cool product. you can watch tv on your computer. If you hook it up to your main tv and you are away watching tv, the person watching that tv has to watch what you are watching.
Don't forget, you need a dedicated source. I have mine hooked tothe cable box in the bedroom. If you travel alot and are places where there is a hotspot to get online, you can watch tv just like you are at home. Now I can get on my slingbox in my home network or outside my home network and it was very easy to set up.I really just use mine as a toy.
The software loaded and worked, but my router would not let me watch it outside my home network. After resetting, everything worked fine. It does just what it says it does. After a while of frustration and checking online, I finally figured out thatthere is a small reset button on the back of the unit itself.
After a few months, my router went out on me and I had to buy a new one. It is very easy to install, and it walks you right through even if you don't know much about computers.When I first got this I had an Ativa router. But the thing was so cool that I just watched it in my home network.
Fantastic. My son moved to a small town in the UK. For a $100 item, it is truly amazing and simple to hook up and use worldwide. He loves it, his wife loves it, and I have found it to be a very useful addition to my computer when I travel as well. He asked me to get a Slingbox and connect it to my TV for him to watch sports, Saturday Night Live, and local news while he is over there for three years. I purchased the product, hooked it up and also, since I travel a lot myself, set up my computer to work with Slingbox as well.
I can even watch at work. The movies are clear and no interruption with the streamline. For the price it's worth it. I was planning on getting another dvr for my bedroom and pay the monthly service fee to watch all my recordings but a friend of my told me about this product and it's the best thing I ever brought. I can watch everything I have recorded and watch tv right on my bed.
I would order from this company again. This product came brand new in its package and came earlier then expected ( from new york to corpus christi, texas).
Outstanding. My bad - without the IR cable, no remote control.I emailed support requesting a location to purchase another cable: their response - "call us." This seemed strange, but I went with it.On the phone - the answer: you do not need to purchase another cable - we will send you one within 5 days - what's your address. I grabbed the wire, not the metal plug & the wire separated from the plug (which was still in the unit).
It's not magic, just good technology.What I can offer are two comments - both great - about their service & what happens after purchase.1) I had troubles configuring my router to allow internet access (DMZ, etc). Period. If you read any review here, you will know this system really works.
Outstanding.2) I broke the IR control cable off from the back of the unit while I was moving things around. No money, no credit card, they just wanted the address and the serial number (presumably to protect against abuse). They took control of my computer's screen (with my permission) and got it working.
When I changed routers - they again configured it so that it worked.
